Robyn Gallagher

Cardiovascular Nursing Lecturer

Robyn Gallagher is Professor of Nursing at Sydney Nursing School based at the Charles Perkins Centre and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Technology, Sydney. Professor Gallagher’s clinical and academic career focusses on understanding and supporting patients who have cardiovascular disease throughout their recovery, encouraging and enabling good self-management and reducing their risk of future cardiovascular events through secondary prevention.Professor Gallagher’s research aims to help patients to recover and lead healthier lives after admission to hospital for heart problems such as heart attack, cardiac arrhythmias and heart failure. Her work helps patients to reduce their risk of having further heart events, through cardiac rehabilitation, exercise and physical activity, medications, and weight management. Professor Gallagher’s research specifically addresses the factors that influence patients’ ability to self-manage, including cognition and health literacy and the difficulties patients face in coming to terms with having heart disease and the changes they need to make.

The Cardiovascular Nursing Lecture

In April 2005, the Cardiovascular Nurses Working Group approached the Council of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand Council requesting a dedicated Cardiovascular Nursing Lecture to be instituted. The Council agreed with the proposal and the inaugural lecture was presented at the 2006 Annual Scientific Meeting in Canberra.
