Qualifying in medicine at the London Hospital Medical College and obtaining a BSc (Hons) in Psychology, Professor Gale worked as a Junior Doctor at the Royal London Hospital. After becoming a Member of the Royal College of Physicians, he became a Medical Research Council Clinical Training Fellow and undertook at Ph.D in molecular biology at the University of Leeds. Specialty training in Cardiology was undertaken principally at the Leeds General Infirmary, where Professor Gale was a Walport and later a NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer. He holds a Masters in Clinical Education and a Masters in Statistical Epidemiology. As a Consultant Cardiologist he completed a five year NIHR Clinician Scientist Award to become a NIHR Clinical Trials Fellow. He now leads the Cardiovascular Epidemiology Group at the Medical Research Council Bioninformatics Centre, University of Leeds. Professor Gale has published over 100 original research papers, received over £6M in research grants and is Deputy Editor of European Heart Journal Quality of Care and Clinical Outcomes. Professor Gale is Chair of the research committee of the National Institute for Cardiovascular Outcomes Research. In addition to membership of the NICE Indicator Advisory Committee, he is an oversight committee member of the ESC EuorObservational Research Programme and Secretary of the ESC Acute Cardiovascular Care Association.
